WELCOME TO LIFE & LEISURE GUESTHOUSE – Sans Souci

In 1720 the wagon road winding through the valley to the Jonkershoek Mountains was called “De Wagenweg naar Jonkershoek”. During the 1800’s the thoroughfare was known as “Jonkershoekweg” until it was renamed after Jan van Reibeeck, the founder of Cape Town, in 1906. Today, more than 100 years later, the historical route is still called van Riebeeck Street is home to the Life & Leisure Guesthouse named Sans Souci.
Sans Souci in French means “without troubles” and appears in many historical reference books about Stellenbosch, to which van Riebeek paved the way. The property was originally part of Aan’t Molenwater whose owner Margaret De Wet, briefed renowned Cape Town architects, Parker and Forsyth, to build a house on the original tennis court area in 1937. During the recent restoration activities that were strictly monitored by the Stellenbosch Historical Aesthetics Committee, visible layers of strata showing the remains of the tennis court could be seen in some places.
Stellenbosch is one of the most important historical towns in South Africa hence the care with which such a valuable property located in the heart of the historical centre of town, is handled. The Aesthetics Committee has continuously emphasized the importance of the property, considering not only its noteworthy architecture, but also its exceptional location.
Sans Souci was bought by Margie Potgieter and Marthinus Brink who appreciated the significance of estate and, together with the help of architect Ernest Harper, renovated the building before opening it as a guesthouse in 2005.

Today Sans Souci is the flagship Life & Leisure guesthouse. It is an art deco dream with purist luxury style: renowned for its sleek design and elegant functionality it’s no wonder that one in five guests stay for longer than four weeks. • Off-street parking
• Air-conditioning
• Satellite television
• Communal lounge
