FINGER ON THE PULSE ON THE EVE OF GUY FAWKES 2014
THE ENGLISH AMONGST YOU WILL NO DOUBT BE PREPARING FOR SOME KIND OF FESTIVITIES THIS EVENING TO CELEBRATE GUY FAWKES. THIS PLOT TO BLOW UP THE HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT IN LONDON WAS FORTUNATELY FOILED. WHAT A TRAGEDY IT WOULD HAVE BEEN TO HAVE LOST THOSE BEAUTIFUL , HISTORICAL BUILDINGS.
Here in Africa, Guy Fawkes it is not so readily celebrated although sparklers for the children are a given in most homes. It does serve as a reminder, however that the holidays are not far off so here are a few thoughts and ideas if you are headed to South Africa either with your family or a group of friends.
If you are a party of ten or so, there really is no better way to have a holiday than to take a private house or villa. Fitzpatrick’s at Jock is one such in the Kruger Park Sleeping 6 adults and 4 children, it has a pool, overlooks the Biyamiti River and is in a very game (and bird) rich area of the Kruger Park. However young your children are, you can introduce them to the bush; the bush is a playground of ideas for children’s games (who can spot 4 bird and 4 tree types first) and you will have fun explaining why the impala male has so many wives to look after.
If your children are very young and you feel happier in a malaria free area, then Uplands Homestead at Kwandwe in the Eastern Cape might be ideal for you. One of the delights of a private house is that you can choose how long your game drives are (your child’s attention span will usually dictate this) without fear of upsetting other guests who don’t have children.
At Birkenhead Villa in Hermanus, (6 double rooms), there is a playroom for the children and a chef who welcomes helping hands in the kitchen; pizza making at the seaside. Hermanus is wonderful from November to April for sun and the beach; if you want to see the whales then plan to come between July and September. Birkenhead is right on the beach so you don’t have to move far to see the whales or have a swim in the Indian Ocean.
