Fugitives’ Drift Lodge Newsletter December 2014
A very happy Christmas to you and your families.
2014 has been a busy and exciting year. We said goodbye to Carla, Lara, Hencko and Willem, and welcomed Dom, Simeone and Megan to the team. It is with sadness that Charl and Dom are leaving us early next year to take up a position in Malawi, they have both been a great asset to the Lodge and Guest House and we will miss them.
We are very pleased to announce that Douglas Rattray will be joining the team from January 2015. He has been looking forward to this day since he was about 10 years old! I am not sure who is more excited, him or me!
“Out of the Fire into the Frying Pan”, the story of our 25 years at Fugitives’ Drift as well as some of our favourite recipes is a collaborative project with Chris Harvie (who many of you know from Rissington Inn in Hazyview) and me in charge of the stories, and Anel and Andrew the cooking, food styling and the photographs.
We had a lot of fun recalling stories and going through all the old photographs to put the book together.
The books arrived last week and are available from the Lodge (lodge@fugitivesdrift.com – or print the order form off the website).
This is perfect timing for Christmas, just in case you were wondering what to give Great Aunt Mildred ……?
We are busy renovating the Farmhouse, which will be ready for occupation early next year. This is long overdue and I am sure those of you who have stayed there before will be very pleased to know that there is an extra bathroom going in!
The game continues to flourish and the giraffe population at last count stands at 30.
Rains were late this year, and while the bush has turned a brilliant green with the rain we have had, we do need more.
Our pride and joy Emily, Andrew and Anel’s daughter has just turned one, she is much loved by everyone here, and is not at all daunted by the new faces she sees every day!
We have had a succession of gap students who have done us proud. We have a few gaps for gappers next year, email us if you are interested.
The David Rattray Foundation continues to make a difference to the children in the 17 schools it supports. Any help you can give us is much appreciated.
In the words of Nelson Mandela,”Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”.
