Legendary hotelier Horst Frehse to retire
We pay tribute to our Executive Director and wish him well for the future
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
It was in January 1970 that our Executive Director Horst Frehse started his hotel career at the Hotel School Bad Reichenhall in Bavaria, Germany. 45 years and a stellar career path later, the time has come for him to say goodbye. His well-earned retirement is a great loss for South Africa’s hotel industry – as one of the country’s most respected and successful hoteliers he has been a mentor, colleague, idol and friend to many. Hotel and Spa’s success over the past five years, thanks to his phenomenal industry connections, his devotion, vivacious nature, and the compassionate heart that he generously shared with his staff, clients and guests from around the world – all of whom will miss him dearly.
In his own words, ‘It is with great appreciation and wonderful memories that I will reminisce about my career as a hotelier in the years to come. I would like to thank the many amazing guests, friends, ‘guests-who-became-friends’ and many hotel colleagues who have contributed over the years to the fulfilled, exciting hotel-life and career I was so privileged to enjoy.’
Mr Frehse will complete his handover at the end of this month and entrust the hotel to a competent team led by myself and Deputy GM/F&B Manager, Gavin Ferreira. From December onwards you will be able to catch him spending more time with his wife Barbara and his Labrador, or might happen upon him at the gym or on his bike – or might hear from him from some far-flung corner of the world while he indulges in one of his great passions, travel.
We would like to wish him only the very best for this new chapter of his life, and will strive to follow in his footsteps!
