Marlin Lodge – Mozambique
On December 12, 2012, a wildfire originating in the bush surrounding Marlin Lodge spread to the property causing damage to some of the lodge’s suites as well as the lodge’s main building. All guests were safely and promptly evacuated and relocated to other properties on the island.
“The fire was a major setback as Marlin Lodge was to be 100% occupied during the peak season,” says Peter Kunz, Operations Director. “Although we were devastated by the damage caused by the fire as well as the loss of revenue for the lodge, we are a very resilient team and a crisis inadvertently always presents opportunity. We have decided to turn this into a positive venture. Our staff at Marlin Lodge, supported by the entire community on Benguerua Island is totally committed to this challenge and in the past have demonstrated that nothing is impossible.”
“The team at the lodge spent most of December and the month of January clearing rubble from the site with the help from the local community. Many of the burnt gardens are even starting to spring back to life from lodge staff taking their own initiative to water. The team here have been absolutely incredible and everyone has played their part,” says Kunz!”
Marlin Lodge will be refunding all clients and agents who had bookings at the lodge.
Following this incident, Marlin Lodge is currently closed and reconstruction and refurbishment is scheduled to commence soon.
The 13 existing Beach Suites and the newly built 2-Bedroom villa which were unaffected by the fire are intact. A confirmed opening date of the lodge will be communicated soonest.
The lodge has recently completed the building of a two-bedroom Luxury Villa which is the Grand Prize for Mozambique’s global Win an Island Paradise Campaign.
