Sabi Sabi Dreamfields News Update
Building strong communities is one of the basic tenets of Sabi Sabi’s community involvement programme and strong communities need strong schools. Encouraging participation in sport and providing a platform for children to engage in healthy competition is one of the ways that strong schools are created and nurtured. Five years ago, Sabi Sabi partnered with the Dreamfields Project to build strong and sustainable soccer and netball leagues in 15 schools in the Lillydale area adjacent to its lodges, from where many of their staff hail.
Sabi Sabi was the first Dreamfields partner to establish a DreamLeague where teams play in a league with top teams battling it out for honours in a finals weekend with prizes for the victorious youngsters. In September another successful season came to an end and again the finals were fiercely contested and strongly supported.
All of the schools in the Sabi Sabi DreamLeague system gathered at Mabarhule High to settle the argument on who would have bragging rights for 2012 It was a great day for Babati Primary which won the primary schools netball title and came second in the junior soccer, losing an exciting final to Mhlahle.
Among the high schools, Madlala rule the roost as football champions while Hlomani are the queens of Lillydale High School netball. Dreamfields’ Susan van der Merwe was at the finals tournament. “The excitement and enthusiasm for sport seen in Lillydale year after year, combined with the amazing vision of Sabi Sabi – what an inspiration!” she said.
“The soccer and netball leagues Sabi Sabi has created provided a model for the sustainability we have tried to achieve in other parts of the country,” says Dreamfields CEO John Perlman. “The Lillydale leagues have run for longer than anywhere else and inspired us to do the same in other parts of the country.”
Dreamfields is a non-profit organisation, founded in 2007, which helps to resource and run schools football in townships and rural areas across South Africa. More than R33-million has been invested in communities to date and Sabi Sabi has played a big part in Dreamfields growth.
