Dining at Sabi Sabi – delicious, delectable, decadent and diverse
Four beautiful 5-Star lodges set in various locations within the 6000-hectare unfenced Sabi Sabi Game Reserve offer unparalleled game viewing, incomparable luxury accommodation and, as the cherry on top, a host of dining choices overseen by four talented and enthusiastic chefs.
But it’s not just the cuisine which is fresh, exciting and inspiring: across the lodges there are literally dozens of breathtaking settings to make each mealtime a memorable event.
Bush Lodge’s famous buffet breakfasts are usually enjoyed in the indoor dining area, a spectacular venue under the cover of a huge spreading thatched roof, with the bushveld and a very well utilised waterhole just metres away. Succulent fresh fruits, homemade, still-warm pastries, special hot dishes, local meats and cheeses, piping hot coffee and a range of other delicacies make breakfast a firm favourite, while the lunches, with their huge variety of hot and cold dishes, fresh salads and sinful desserts offer more than enough variety and delectable taste to satisfy any hungry guest. At night the boma beckons. Set alongside the sparkling swimming pools and also overlooking the waterhole – which is softly lit to enable guests to view any nocturnal animals coming to drink – sociable dinners extend late into the evening, with stories and conversations around the fire almost as diverse and interesting as the delicious food.
At Little Bush Camp, the open-sided dining area overlooks a riverbed and is ideal for breakfasting before the heat of the day sets in; at night the boma is perfect for a traditional South African braai (barbeque) complete with fresh venison and coal roasted vegetables enjoyed under the African skies. The Msuthlu riverbed in front of the lodge is an exciting setting for private dining, attended to by Sabi Sabi staff members; while picnics in the savannah-like open areas around the lodge are a thrilling and delicious surprise.
|Selati Camp with its historic railway theme, has a traditional “farmhouse kitchen”, modelled on the warm and inviting kitchens of old where families would gather for their evening meals. This venue, complete with its antique wooden table, comfy chairs and other authentic railway memorabilia is known the world over for its congenial atmosphere – this is a wonderful venue for special occasion dinners. The resident chef oversees every detail to ensure an unforgettable and mouth-watering function. Selati Camp also has a two covered outdoor viewing decks and an intimate dining area for buffet breakfasts and lunches, as well as a cosy boma for evening meals beneath the canopy of stars. These are wonderful places to experience the sights, smells and sounds of Africa.|
At Earth Lodge, dining is an experience in itself. During the recent lodge renovations a unique new covered ‘day bar’ was unveiled. At this wonderful venue guests are able relax at stone topped tables right inside the pool, cooling their feet in ankle deep water and savouring the superb cuisine prepared by Earth Lodge’s chefs – all the while watching the parade of animals at the waterhole beyond. Servers wade silently through the water offering refreshing locally-inspired cocktails or a freshly brewed cup of coffee. Delicious meals are also served around the central ponds, with resident frogs providing the background music. The underground wine cellar is a memorable venue for gourmet meals. Lit by a magnificent candelabra atop a massive hand-hewn wooden table and lined with an award winning collection of thousands of bottles of wine, the cellar has a magical, mystical ambience. As with the other 3 lodges, the outdoor boma at Earth Lodge remains a firm favourite spot for evening meals. The enclosure, encircled by upended tree roots, is lit by lanterns hanging from branches and warmed by braziers. For those guests wanting a little more privacy, meals can also be taken in the meditation garden, or in the luxury of one’s suite.
Whatever the location, whatever the occasion, whichever the lodge, the Sabi Sabi chefs will prepare memorable, mouth-watering meals to satisfy any appetite or discerning palate.
