Uncompromising Adventure Since 1978

India 2016

This year we deeply regretted disappointing a number of our friends who were too late in booking our 2015 India tiger safaris. It is with this in mind that we wish to let everyone know that there are a few remaining spaces on each of our 2016 departures. Don’t miss this magnificent opportunity to see some of the few remaining Bengal tigers in their natural habitat; to experience the ancient “civilisation” of India far from the usual tourist paths. Our safari is a grand mix of the modern and the ancient. This 18 day safari (India simply can’t be seen in less time than this) includes one week of hiking across the remote Satpura hills, followed by game drives in Kanha and Bandhavgarh tiger reserves. At the end of our trip we step back into the Raj, take the 1905 “toy train” up to Shimla, in the foothills of the Himalayas, and base ourselves at the beautiful Wildflower Hall. (Make a point of watching the new British miniseries Indian Summers, which is set in Shimla, 1932, which is currently showing in the United States.)

On our trip we will overnight in beautiful camps on the hiking section; small five room Eco lodges when we tiger view; and spectacular Wildflower Hall at 7,000 feet (where the hot chocolate, brandy and colonial sized billiard table awaits) in Shimla. We’ll slip into the India mood by staying at the fabulous Imperial Hotel in Delhi at the start of our safari.

It is easy for those of us who spend most of our time in the African bush to develop a “what more can you show me” type attitude to wildlife in other parts of the world. We can assure you however, that no African lion or leopard can equal the impact of that earth-silencing moment when the magnificent head of a wild tiger emerges from the jungle close to our vehicle, and the seemingly endless length of its 720 pound body lopes aloof and unconcerned down the track beside us. There are fewer than 2,200 left in the wilds of our planet, it is something one has to see.
