“I CAN MAKE A GENERAL IN FIVE MINUTES, BUT A GOOD HORSE IS HARD TO REPLACE.” (ABRAHAM LINCOLN)
Walking the dogs in the park yesterday, I noticed a group riding horses. Being of the opinion that one should avoid getting into or onto anything that you cannot turn off with a key, I tend to forget about the wonderful horseback safaris available in Africa.
Horseback is a wonderful way to see the bush. One has a sense of complete freedom, not hampered by vehicles nor surrounded by other tourists. In addition, horses have far greater vision than humans and will detect things way before we might. Thus a horse and rider can make a great team in the bush.
Here are just two that we can offer you in East Africa:
Safaris Unlimited offer exhilarating horseback safaris in the Masaai Mara and in central Kenya. They also have an iconic ride combining the Masaai Mara, Victoria Falls and the Okavango Delta annually; usually in June/July. Accommodation is in a fully staffed mobile camp, with great meals, comfy beds and a host of delightful staff to ensure you enjoy your safari to the most. You can put your own party together or join a group as they have a number of scheduled departures. The shortest trip is for 3 nights so it is easily combined with a more traditional safari if you don’t want to spend your whole safari in the saddle
Kaskazi Horse Safaris offer similar style horseback safaris in northern Tanzania, exploring a variety of areas, including the soda Lake Natron. Like most companies, Kaskazi’s horses are a mix of thoroughbreds and crossbreeds, resulting in reliable, even tempered horses suited to all kinds of riders. Additional areas explored are Amboseli and the magnificent Enduimet game corridor with safaris ranging from 5 to 8 nights. Accommodation is in custom made bell tents, with adjacent facilities. The smiling Tanzanian staff move the camp for you so each night you find your tent in a different, exciting part of Tanzania. Robyn will ensure you get a comfortable ride on either of these safaris.
