Wheelchair Accessible Tours in South Africa: Accessible Safaris With Epic Enabled

A safari should be for everyone. Wheelchair accessible tours make it possible for travellers with limited mobility to experience the Kruger National Park, Cape Town and the Garden Route in comfort, alongside friends and family. Specialist operator Epic Enabled has been running accessible tours in South Africa since 2001, for disabled and non-disabled travellers alike.

How accessible safaris work

  • Adapted vehicles: tours use specially adapted vehicles, for example with a hydraulic lift, so wheelchair users can board easily and see wildlife at eye level.
  • Accessible accommodation: rooms are chosen for step-free access and roll-in showers wherever possible.
  • Experienced guides: guides understand accessibility needs and plan activities and rest stops accordingly.
  • Mixed groups: everyone is welcome, including individuals, couples, families and groups, whether or not they use a wheelchair.

Popular wheelchair accessible tours

Kruger safari (around 8 days)

Spend several days exploring Kruger National Park in search of the Big Five, then move to a private game reserve for guided game drives and close wildlife encounters before returning to Johannesburg.

Kruger and Cape Town highlights (around 12 days)

Combine a Kruger safari with Cape Town: Table Mountain’s accessible cableway, the Cape of Good Hope, the Stellenbosch Winelands and the V&A Waterfront.

Garden Route tour (around 5 days)

Travel from Cape Town along the coast via Hermanus, Mossel Bay, Oudtshoorn, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and Tsitsikamma.

Day tours

Accessible day tours in Cape Town (Table Mountain, Cape Point, Kirstenbosch, the Winelands and seasonal whale watching in Hermanus) and Johannesburg (including Soweto) can also be arranged.

Itineraries and departure dates change, and many scheduled tours need a minimum number of travellers, so we confirm current options when you enquire.

Accessible travel in South Africa: what to know

  • Kruger National Park has accessible units in several rest camps, but they’re limited, so book early.
  • Table Mountain’s cableway is wheelchair accessible, as are some paved paths at the top.
  • Kirstenbosch has paved paths and accessible facilities.
  • Private game lodges vary widely. Some, such as Sabi Sabi’s Bush Lodge, have a dedicated accessible suite.
  • Bring any medical equipment you need, plus spares, as specialist parts can be hard to source in remote areas.
