Arumvale Country House

Arumvale Country House is perfectly situated from which to explore Swellendam & its surrounds or to enjoy a comfortable countryside experience with majestic mountain views & natural landscapes.

Arumvale Country House provides well appointed, self-catering guest facilities and friendly, professional service. Arumvale Country House is situated in Swellendam’s beautiful Hermitage Valley, a short twenty-five minute walk or three kilometre drive from Swellendam’s historic town centre. Arumvale Country House has commanding views of the Langeberg Mountains and surrounding farmlands.

Arumvale Country House has three luxury, self-catering suites, one standard suite and a rustic garden cottage located within a beautiful garden & countryside setting. Each suite has a large bedroom with en-suite bathroom, a tastefully themed lounge, kitchenette, private patio and separate entrance.

Guests can relax in summer on the verandah overlooking the swimming pool while enjoying magnificent views up the Hermitage Valley or gather round the cosy open fireplace in each of the suites. Free wireless internet is available throughout Arumvale and secure on-site parking is provided for guests’ vehicles.

Arumvale Country Guesthouse is a perfect place to explore the history, heritage & architecture of Swellendam, wander along the numerous paths and tracks through the countryside & nearby Marloth Nature Reserve, or simply relax in a beautiful, peaceful countryside setting.

Accommodation: Guest Suites

The Malette Suite comprises of a tastefully decorated lounge with open log fireplace, a cosy bedroom with queen-size bed, a bathroom with bath and toilet and adjoining dressing room, a dining area and a fully equipped kitchen. Enjoy a Weber kettle braai (bbq) on the outside patio. The Malette Suite sleeps two adults with the option of a further adult on a sleeper couch in the lounge. The suite is equipped with cable television and a DVD player. Tasteful decorating with country-styled fabrics and antique furniture gives the Malette Suite a warm, cosy ambiance in winter and a cool, airy feel in the heat of summer. The Malette Suite is situated on the ground floor of Arumvale Country House with a separate, private entrance.

The Carol Suite comprises of a tastefully decorated lounge with open log fireplace, a cosy bedroom with queen-size bed, a bathroom with bath and toilet, a dining area and a fully equipped kitchen. Enjoy a Weber kettle braai (bbq) on the outside patio. The Carol Suite sleeps two adults with the option of a further adult on a sleeper couch in the lounge. The suite is equipped with cable television and a DVD player. The Carol Suite is situated on the upper floor of Arumvale Country House with a separate, private entrance.

The Anneline Suite is a two story cottage close to the main country house. The ground floor has a tastefully decorated lounge with a freestanding Jetmaster fireplace, fully equipped kitchen, dining area, downstairs shower & toilet. Single sleeper couches can accommodate two additional adults in the downstairs lounge. The upstairs bedroom has a comfortable queen-sized bed, its own shower, toilet and balcony with commanding views overlooking the pastures & mountains. The suite is equipped with cable television and DVD player. Tasteful decorating gives the Anneline Suite a warm, cosy ambiance in winter and a cool, airy feel in the heat of summer. The Anneline Suite is separate from the main Arumvale Country House with its own private entrance, outdoor braai & entertainment area and carport.

The Garden Cottage provides a completely different experience to Arumvale’s other guest suites. Originally a farm labourers cottage, it has been tastefully converted into a well-equipped, rustic guest cottage situated in the corner of Arumvale’s extensive gardens. Many guests enjoy its simple ambiance, basic facilities and understated class. The Garden Cottage has a combined bedroom & lounge with a comfortable double bed. The en-suite shower & toilet has a classic rustic farm ambiance while providing all the necessary facilities need for a comfortable & enjoyable farm-style visit. The Garden Cottage has tea & coffee facilities and simple gas cooking equipment. Enjoy the romantic glow of parafin lanterns inside the Garden Cottage at night, as the cottage is not equiped with electricity but does have solar-powered LED lighting for your convenience. Enjoy an outside braai next to the paddock with spectacular views up the Kloof and Langeberg Mountains

Self-catering:

Arumvale Country House is a self-catering hospitality facility. Each suite has a fully equipped kitchen and comfortable dining table. A large refrigerator is provided in each suite with enough capacity for a family’s food for several days. Each suite has a private veranda and a Weber kettle braai (BBQ). A generous amount of free firewood is provided for our guest’s use. Complementary tea, coffee and rusks are provided for your visit. The Garden Cottage is rustic and equipped differently to the Suites as it is not connected to the national power grid. The Garden Cottage has solar powered lighting, a gas cooker and fridge.

Swellendam has well-stocked supermarkets (Checkers, OK Grocer, Shoprite U Save & Super Spar), which are located in the commercial area of town, and a number of smaller shops selling supplies for visitors (click here for more shopping info).

SwellenMark Shopping Centre has a comprehensive range of retail shops and supermarkets. It is situated in the town centre (34 Voortrek Street opposite the Spar) with parking accessible from the side streets.

Hosts:

George and Bev Missing are the owners and operators of Arumvale Country Guesthouse. They have been living in Swellendam since 2004 after developing & running the very successful Cranberry Guesthouse in Ladybrand, near Lesotho, for fourteen years. George managed his own successful construction company in Swellendam prior to establishing and running Arumvale Country Guesthouse. Bev established the hugely successful Rain “Created for Living” franchise from it’s early beginnings in a garage in Swellendam in 2005. Today Rain employs over sixty local Swellendam people and has 8 retail outlets in South Africa, New York and Amsterdam. Both George and Bev are active in Swellendam’s town, church & civic life while contributing significantly to the development & upliftment of the town’s less fortunate people through a range of appropriate upliftment projects.

Directions:

Coming from Cape Town of Hermanus along N2:

Driving east from Cape Town or Hermanus along the N2 National Road you will drive over the Breede River bridge a short distance out from Swellendam. Turn left at the first Swellendam turnoff that leads onto the R60 to Swellendam, Ashton & Worcester. Pass straight through the four-way stop street along the R60 over a slight incline in the road and after 1 km turn right at the Hermitage road sign. Travel 200 metres along the Hermitage road before turning left on a gravel road at the Arumvale Country Guest House. Travel along the good quality gravel road for 950 metres before seeing the entrance gates to Arumvale Country Guesthouse on the left side of the road.

Coming from George / Mossel Bay along N2:

Driving west from George / Mossel Bay along the N2 National Road, drive past the first two Swellendam turn offs. Approximately 4 km past the first Swellendam turn-off, turn right from the N2 onto the R60 Swellendam, Ashton & Worcester road. Pass straight through the four-way stop street along the R60 over a slight incline in the road and after 1 km turn right at the Hermitage road sign. Travel 200 metres along the Hermitage road before turning left on a gravel road at the Arumvale Country Guest House. Travel along the good quality gravel road for 950 metres before seeing the entrance gates to Arumvale Country Guesthouse on the left side of the road.

Coming from Robertson & Montagu along R60:

Driving south along the R60 you will pass the Oude Meulen Pub & Restaurant as you near Swellendam. Some 3,5 km past the Oude Meulen Pub you will take the first turn to the left at the Hermitage road sign. Travel 200 metres along the Hermitage road before turning left on a gravel road at the Arumvale Country Guest House. Travel along the good quality gravel road for 950 metres before seeing the entrance gates to Arumvale Country Guesthouse on the left side of the road.
