Houtkapperspoort Mountain Retreat Cottages
There has to be a good reason why guests return to our wonderful country South Africa, and in particular to this specific area nestling on the back slopes of Table Mountain. Flanked by the majestic Twelve Apostles mountain range and the Constantia Berg mountain range, lies Houtkapperspoort which has a rich history of roping and lugging logs to Hout Bay Harbour and loading them for shipping to Table Bay harbour.
Today guests can relax and enjoy these same beautiful views from their comfortable accommodation in the Hout Bay valley. For 27 years Houtkapperspoort has played an important role in our local as well as international guests’ annual holidays to Hout Bay, and we are very proud of our reputation of offering accommodation of the highest standard in South Africa – Cape Town, whilst the tariff remains remarkable value for money.
Hout Bay, a short but beautiful drive down the Main Road from Houtkapperspoort, has evolved from a quaint little village to one of thé popular towns on the Atlantic Seaboard. The increasingly popular Hout Bay Craft Market is held every Sunday at the common between 10am and 4pm. There are pony rides for children, food stalls, jewellery, clothes, second hand books, framed historical photo’s, a mini nursery, and much more to choose from.
Approximately 2km from the Common is the largest Bird Park in Africa, the World of Birds. Set aside enough time for this absolute must visit. You are welcome to take a picnic basket and relax before completing your visit, and if you are there at closing time, one of the resident Macaws could bid you goodbye!
Although there is ample accommodation in Hout Bay to choose from, Houtkapperspoort has stood the test of time, and has many returning international guests, as well as South Africans, guests from bordering Namibia and even locals from Hout Bay and Constantia.
There are many things to do and see, and our Houtkapperspoort staff will assist in arranging a boat trip to Seal Island, give you information on scuba diving, sailing, jet skiing, point you in the right direction to view whales during the season and advise where to go horse riding. An extensive information file is in all the units with many more activities to choose from.

Directions From Cape Town International Airport
On exiting the airport grounds, follow the Cape Town signs. Drive over the bridge and immediately turn right towards and onto the freeway (N2) which will take you towards Cape Town.
Closer to Cape Town the road will start turning towards Table Mountain. You will drive over a bridge (the M5). Make sure you are in the left lane. Go over a bridge (M5), underneath two bridges (close together) and underneath the third bridge the road will split. Turn to your left (Muizenberg/Kirstenbosch/ M3).
This will put you onto De Waal Drive, which becomes Rhodes Drive. The University will be on your right with Rhodes Memorial a bit further on your right as well. Soon after, go over to the right hand lane, and at your first set of traffic lights, turn right (Board=Hout Bay/Kirstenbosch).
Drive past Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens (on your right), and at the T-junction turn right again. Go uphill (there is a pedestrian crossing at the top on the turn – be careful!), and then downhill through all the turns, past Cecilia Forest (on your right) until you get to the traffic circle (roundabout) at Constantia Nek.
Go around the circle (avoid the first exit), and downhill towards Hout Bay (M63). The entrance to Houtkapperspoort is about 200m down the road, first entrance on your right.
As you enter the premises, please stop at the security boom and they will direct you to the office during office hours, or to your cottage if it is after office hours. Please note that the speed limit is 10kmh on the property.
