Golf Safari in South Africa: 14 Days of Golf, Garden Route and the Big Five

Why choose between golf and wildlife? This 14-day “Slice of Heaven” golf safari in South Africa runs from Cape Town to the Eastern Cape. It combines six rounds on the country’s most scenic courses with the Winelands, scenic Route 62, the Garden Route and a malaria-free Big Five safari in Addo.

At a glance

  • Duration: 14 days
  • Route: Cape Town → Stellenbosch → Route 62 → Knysna → Cape St Francis → Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth)
  • Golf: 6 rounds: Westlake, Pearl Valley, Simola, Pezula, St Francis Bay and St Francis Links
  • Safari: Addo Elephant National Park plus an evening game drive in a private reserve

Sample itinerary

Days 1–3: Cape Town

Arrive and lunch at Kirstenbosch, take a walking tour of the city and visit a township with dinner and live music, then spend a day on the Cape Peninsula (Chapman’s Peak, Cape Point and the Boulders penguins). The historic shipwreck walk at Olifantsbos is a highlight.

Day 4: Westlake, then to Stellenbosch

Play Westlake, an easy-walking parkland course, then move to Stellenbosch for an evening stroll along historic Dorp Street.

Day 5: Pearl Valley

Play Jack Nicklaus’s Pearl Valley, the jewel of Cape golf, among the Winelands mountains.

Day 6: Winelands day

Tastings in Paarl and Franschhoek and a brandy distillery visit in Stellenbosch.

Day 7: Route 62 to Knysna

Drive through the Breede River Valley and along Route 62, a scenic, quirky alternative to the coastal N2. Cross the Garcia Pass, stop for lunch with wildlife views on the way, and arrive in Knysna.

Day 8: Simola

Play Jack Nicklaus’s Simola above the Knysna lagoon. Spend the evening exploring Knysna’s waterfront.

Day 9: Pezula

Pezula, on the Eastern Head, is a demanding clifftop course with some of the best views in golf. Finish with a sunset lagoon cruise.

Day 10: Plettenberg Bay and Tsitsikamma to Cape St Francis

Visit Monkeyland and Birds of Eden, walk to the Storms River Mouth suspension bridge in Tsitsikamma, then continue to Cape St Francis.

Day 11: St Francis Bay Golf Club

A friendly coastal course with a great club atmosphere, and a perfect warm-up for tomorrow’s links. Dinner is a traditional potjiekos.

Day 12: St Francis Links, then Gqeberha

Jack Nicklaus’s St Francis Links is a true Scottish-style links with humps, hollows and named holes. Bring your A-game when the wind blows. Afterwards, drive to Gqeberha.

Day 13: Addo Elephant National Park

Spend a full safari day in Addo, a malaria-free park famous for its large elephant herds, where you may also see buffalo, lion, black rhino and leopard. In the afternoon, take a game drive and bush braai in a private reserve.

Day 14: Departure

A morning at leisure (or a quick nine holes) before your flight home.

Why a golf safari works so well

  • Addo and the Eastern Cape are malaria-free.
  • Non-golfers have plenty to do every day.
  • It combines three of South Africa’s best regions in one trip.
