Stellenbosch Golf Holiday: 6 Days of Golf and Wine in Cape Town and the Winelands

The Winelands around Stellenbosch combine championship golf courses with some of the world’s most beautiful vineyards. This six-day “Different Strokes” itinerary blends Stellenbosch golf with Cape Town sightseeing and plenty of wine, for golfers who want more than just 18 holes a day.

At a glance

  • Duration: 6 days: 3 nights in Cape Town and 2 nights in Stellenbosch
  • Golf: 4 rounds: Steenberg, De Zalze, Erinvale and Pearl Valley
  • Highlights: Cape Point, the Boulders penguins, wine-and-chocolate pairing and Franschhoek bubbly

Sample itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Cape Town

Meet your guide at the airport for a drive-by city tour and, weather permitting, a trip up Table Mountain. Lunch at the V&A Waterfront, then the afternoon at leisure.

Day 2: Steenberg

Play Steenberg Golf Club, set on a historic wine estate in the Constantia Valley. Afterwards, enjoy a tasting at one of Constantia’s wine estates, including Groot Constantia, South Africa’s oldest.

Day 3: The Cape Peninsula

Leave the clubs behind for a day on the peninsula. Drive the Atlantic Seaboard through Clifton and Camps Bay to Hout Bay and over Chapman’s Peak Drive, then into Table Mountain National Park’s Cape of Good Hope section. Ride the Flying Dutchman funicular to the old lighthouse at Cape Point, then visit the African penguins at Boulders Beach on the way back.

Day 4: De Zalze, Stellenbosch

Transfer to Stellenbosch and play De Zalze, a Peter Matkovich design among vineyards beneath the Helderberg, which has hosted major amateur championships. Then enjoy a wine-and-chocolate pairing at a nearby estate.

Day 5: Erinvale, Somerset West

Taste wine at a historic Somerset West estate with views over False Bay, then play Erinvale, a Gary Player–designed championship course whose level front nine contrasts with a hilly back nine of sloping lies and big greens.

Day 6: Pearl Valley and departure

Finish at the Jack Nicklaus signature Pearl Valley, often called the jewel of Cape golf, ringed by the Simonsberg and Drakenstein mountains. Then head to Franschhoek for a Méthode Cap Classique tasting and a late lunch before your flight.

More Stellenbosch golf courses

  • Stellenbosch Golf Club: a classic tree-lined parkland course that has hosted the South African Open.
  • Devonvale Golf & Wine Estate: a scenic course in the Devon Valley among the vineyards.
  • Paarl Golf Club (Boschenmeer): a 27-hole layout beneath Paarl Mountain.

Where to stay

We recommend boutique hotels in Cape Town and a wine-estate lodge or guesthouse in Stellenbosch. For a valley escape, see Zorgvliet Country Lodge.
