“Great Walk of Africa Safari” with African Travel Solutions in Partnership

The Great Walk is perhaps the most intense involvement with the African elephant on our planet. It is a 100 mile hike, spread over eleven walking days, through a pristine wilderness environment. The hiking is across mainly level ground, covering approximately ten miles each day, and the purpose of it is to search out, find, and study the wildlife along the way. Our route takes us through the biggest concentration of elephants left in Africa (there are nearly 12,000 in Tsavo).

It is a wonderful holiday for active people who love wildlife. There’s enough walking and exercise to stay fit, but not exhausting. Downtime most afternoons for a nap, to write a journal, or to read a book. Occasional quiet time during the walks when one can think, or tune out. Some amazing and at times exhilarating wildlife encounters on foot. Evening game drives to get close up photos of animals. Fantastic birding. A remote wild setting, eerily quiet starry nights punctuated with wild animal calls. Spectacular campsites, simple but comfortable camps (not over the top boutique chic), healthy campfire cooking, a cold Tusker beer or a glass of wine around the fire. I think you get the picture…

The Great Walk has been the subject of several books, including The Shadow Of Kilimanjaro by Rick Ridgeway, and a 17 page article in National Geographic Adventure. It was chosen as Outside magazines Trip Of The Year 2006, and one of their bucket list departures for 2012.
