“TO SAY RWANDA IS A LAND OF 1000 HILLS IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT”
With everywhere easily accessible by road and with relatively short driving distances – it is easy to explore Rwanda. Every turn in the road reveals amazing, jaw-dropping scenery. The only reason it can take time to get anywhere is the constant impulse to stop and take pictures of the stunning views.
Volcanoes National Park
The Virunga Mountains are world famous for their rich biodiversity and of course the mountain gorillas found here. It is one of three places in the world where you can see these majestic mammals. But there is much more to offer here: golden monkeys, the Buhanga Eco Park, the Musanze Caves and numerous hiking trails including a visit to the Dian Fossey tomb.
Nyungwe National Park
Nyungwe is surely one of the world’s most beautiful and pristine mountain rain forests, it is also believed to be one of Africa’s oldest. Home to habituated chimpanzees and 12 other primate species it is also a birder’s paradise. There are 13 walking trails available throughout this forest ranging from two to eight hours, along with several cultural activities on offer, this is sure to satisfy both cultural and nature experiences.
Lake Kivu
This beautiful lake is surrounded by magnificent mountains and dotted with oft uninhabited islands – the scenery is stunning. Lake Kivu provides the perfect place to relax and enjoy lakeside recreation. Sports and activities include fishing, kayaking, canoeing and boat rides, or simply just relaxing by the shore. Alternatively take in the busy local markets in Rubavu and the bustling border with the DRC.
Akagera
Akagara is located along the border with Tanzania and combines well with Nyungwe and Volcanoes to create a great safari circuit. It is home to many large plains game species as well as species restricted to the papyrus swamps such as the Sitatunga and the much sought-after Shoebill Stork. With the reintroduction of lion by the end of 2014 Akagera is set to place itself firmly on the map.
Kigali
Located in the heart of Rwanda, Kigali is a modern, dynamic and safe city that is well worth exploring. Whilst museums and culture fill the city, it is a thoroughly modern African capital, teeming with innovative ideas. Kigali is clean and safe, and easy to navigate. Stroll through museums and markets during the day and celebrate with dancing and local cuisine at night for a Kigali experience you won’t forget.
