African Overland Tours: A Guide to Overlanding With Africa Travel Co

African overland tours are one of the most adventurous and affordable ways to explore the continent. You travel in a custom-built truck with a small international group and an experienced crew, camping or staying in simple lodges as you cross borders from one highlight to the next. Africa Travel Co is a long-established, Africa-based specialist in overland adventure travel across Southern and East Africa.

What is an overland tour?

Overlanding means covering long distances by road in a purpose-built vehicle, typically with:

  • A custom overland truck with large windows for game viewing, lockers, charging points and an on-board kitchen
  • A crew of a driver, tour leader and cook who handle logistics and share their knowledge
  • Camping equipment (usually dome tents and sleeping mats). You normally bring your own sleeping bag.
  • Most meals, often cooked by the crew with help from the group
  • Core activities and park fees, with optional excursions you can add along the way

Some routes offer upgraded “accommodated” versions with rooms instead of tents.

Popular African overland routes

Cape Town to Victoria Falls

This classic route runs through Namibia’s Fish River Canyon, the dunes of Sossusvlei, Swakopmund and Etosha National Park, then on to Botswana’s Okavango Delta or Chobe and the mighty Victoria Falls.

Johannesburg to Victoria Falls

This route heads north via the Kruger area, then into Zimbabwe or Botswana. Most routes also run in reverse.

East Africa: Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda

The Masai Mara, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, the Great Rift Valley lakes and gorilla trekking in Uganda.

Trans-Africa expeditions

Long journeys of five weeks or more linking East and Southern Africa, for example Nairobi to Cape Town.

Trips range from short three-day excursions to expeditions of more than 50 days, with set departure dates throughout the year.

Who are African overland tours for?

  • Travellers who want to see several countries on one trip
  • Budget-conscious adventurers and solo travellers who’d like company
  • Anyone happy with long days on the road and basic campsites

Most operators welcome adults from 18 up to 60 and beyond, as long as they’re reasonably fit and flexible. Group sizes are typically up to about 24 people.

Tips for your first overland trip

  • Pack light, in a soft bag that fits the truck lockers.
  • Bring a warm sleeping bag, a head torch and a reusable water bottle.
  • Budget for optional activities, such as scenic flights, river cruises or gorilla permits.
  • Check visa and vaccination requirements for every country on the route.
  • Arrange comprehensive travel insurance.
