Golf Holidays in South Africa: An 8-Day Self-Catering Winelands Golf Escape

Not every golf trip needs a packed schedule and hotel dinners. This self-catering option is one of our most relaxed golf holidays in South Africa. You stay in a cottage on a Winelands estate, play five rounds at top courses, and keep your evenings free for braais on the stoep and long dinners in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.

At a glance

  • Duration: 8 days, 7 nights
  • Accommodation: a fully equipped self-catering cottage on a Winelands estate, with a pool and mountain views
  • Golf: 5 rounds, with choices on the last two
  • Extras: a full-day guided Winelands tour

Sample itinerary

Day 1: Arrive and settle in

Collect your car at Cape Town International Airport and drive about 45 minutes to your self-catering cottage among the vineyards.

Day 2: Stellenbosch Golf Club

A classic, tree-lined course that has hosted the South African Open. Its narrow fairways reward straight driving, and it’s well protected from the Cape wind.

Day 3: De Zalze

Peter Matkovich’s parkland layout among vineyards, with the Helderberg as a backdrop.

Day 4: Erinvale

Gary Player’s championship course in Somerset West, famous for the contrast between its flat, watery front nine and its hilly back nine.

Day 5: Winelands tour

A full-day guided tour: Paarl Mountain and the Afrikaans Language Monument, a tasting in Paarl, lunch in Franschhoek, the Huguenot Monument, then over the Helshoogte Pass to historic Stellenbosch.

Day 6: Pearl Valley or Paarl

Choose Jack Nicklaus’s acclaimed Pearl Valley, ringed by the Simonsberg and Drakenstein mountains, or the 27-hole Paarl Golf Club at Boschenmeer beneath Paarl Mountain.

Day 7: Arabella or Strand

Drive to the coast for Arabella on the Bot River lagoon near Hermanus, or play the windswept, water-laced Strand Golf Club on False Bay.

Day 8: Departure

Enjoy a slow breakfast before heading back to the airport.
