Golf Weekend Getaway: 3 Days in the Breede River Valley and Overberg

Short on time? This three-day “Weekend Warriors” golf weekend getaway from Cape Town delivers three very different rounds, mountain and ocean scenery, a taste of Cape heritage and, in season, some of the best whale watching in the world.

At a glance

  • Duration: 3 days, 2 nights in Hermanus (Friday to Sunday)
  • Golf: 3 rounds: Worcester, Hermanus and Arabella
  • Extras: the Kleinplasie open-air museum and a whale-watching boat trip (June to November)

Sample itinerary

Day 1 (Friday): Worcester and the Breede River Valley

Leave Cape Town early for Worcester Golf Club, about an hour away in the Breede River Valley. It’s an 18-hole course ringed by dramatic mountain ranges. Afterwards, visit the Kleinplasie open-air museum for a glimpse of rural Cape life in years gone by, then cross the mountains to the seaside town of Hermanus. Spend the night in a guesthouse near the golf course or a hotel in town.

Day 2 (Saturday): Hermanus Golf Club and whale watching

Hermanus Golf Club has 27 holes set between mountains and sea, with water features and characterful holes. After your round, head to the harbour for a boat-based whale-watching trip (June to November, weather permitting). Southern right whales often come close to shore. The evening is free to enjoy Hermanus’s restaurants.

Day 3 (Sunday): Arabella and Clarence Drive

Finish at Arabella, a Peter Matkovich design on the Bot River lagoon near Kleinmond that is consistently ranked among South Africa’s best. Return to Cape Town along Clarence Drive, a spectacular coastal road above False Bay that’s often compared with California’s Big Sur.

Why the Overberg is perfect for a golf weekend getaway

  • It’s under two hours from Cape Town
  • There’s a great mix of mountain, parkland and lagoon-side golf
  • Hermanus is one of the world’s best whale-watching towns (see our southern right whale season guide)
  • Good restaurants, wine routes and coastal walks
