Golf and Wine Tour: 6 Days in Cape Town and the Cape Winelands

Few places in the world pair golf and wine as naturally as the Western Cape. Championship courses sit among vineyards, and the 19th hole often comes with an award-winning wine list. This six-day “Tee and Wine” tour balances three rounds of golf with the best tastings, cellars and views of the Cape.

At a glance

  • Duration: 6 days: 3 nights in Cape Town, 2 nights in Stellenbosch
  • Golf: 3 rounds: Westlake, De Zalze and Pearl Valley
  • Wine: cellar tours, sparkling wine in Franschhoek and a brandy distillery

Sample itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Cape Town

Your guide meets you at the airport and takes you to Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden for a light lunch with local wine and a run-through of the week ahead. Then check in and relax.

Day 2: Westlake

Play Westlake, an easy-walking, tree-lined parkland course with an environmental conscience: it irrigates with treated water rather than drinking water. The evening is free to explore Cape Town’s restaurants.

Day 3: The Cape Peninsula

Drive the Atlantic Seaboard and Chapman’s Peak to the Cape of Good Hope, ride the funicular to the Cape Point lighthouse, and visit the African penguins at Boulders Beach.

Day 4: De Zalze

Transfer to Stellenbosch to play Peter Matkovich’s De Zalze among the vines. The evening is at leisure in Stellenbosch.

Day 5: The wine day

Swap your clubs for a glass (or several). Start with a cellar tour and tasting in the Paarl wine region, head to Franschhoek for Méthode Cap Classique sparkling wine, and finish at a Stellenbosch brandy distillery to see the traditional art of cooperage (barrel-making).

Day 6: Pearl Valley and departure

End with Jack Nicklaus’s Pearl Valley, surrounded by the Simonsberg and Drakenstein mountains, then enjoy an early dinner before your flight.

Wines to try on a golf and wine tour

  • Chenin Blanc: South Africa’s signature white grape
  • Pinotage: the country’s own red grape
  • Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux blends from Stellenbosch
  • Méthode Cap Classique from Franschhoek and Robertson
  • Potstill brandy, among the world’s best
